RESCHEDULED: Council President Fielkow to Visit Iberville Community Center for Reopening

November 30, 2009

"I'm so pleased to be able to welcome the kids back to the center..."

What:     Due to the Saints game, New Orleans City Council President Arnie Fielkow has
rescheduled his visit to the Iberville Community Center for Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 5
p.m., for an informal reopening of the facility, which closed earlier this month from
                a shortage of operating funds.

Last week, after hearing of financial difficulties at the Iberville Community Center,

Councilman Fielkow led an effort to find donors willing to contribute stop-gap funds

to keep the center open through the next 60 days. Fielkow's effort led to a

combined personal, corporate and public stop-gap donations totaling $26,000.

These funds will reopen and maintain the facility through the next 60 days. Among

other donations, Fielkow included $5,000 from his own pot of Harrah’s grant money

to keep the center open. Additionally, Councilman Fielkow has scheduled a

meeting with Office of Housing and Urban Development officials as early as next

week to discuss long-term funding opportunities for this important community

                center.

Councilman Fielkow has invited all City Council members and contributors to the

reopening, including the Greater New Orleans Afterschool Partnership program and

the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Louisiana.

"I'm so pleased to be able to welcome the kids back to the center Monday, and

also that it was made possible by the rapid assistance of so many concerned

organizations and citizens," said Fielkow. "Because of these efforts, the children of

Iberville will not lose their community center during the holiday season. I will work

dilligently to help find long-term funding sources for this very important facility."
